Nairobi National Park
Location:
It's Kenya's oldest national Park having
been established in 1946. The park is located 10km southeast
of Nairobi's city center it's within the Capital City,
Nairobi.
Attractions:
It's a home to 100 recorded species of mammals.
You are very likely to see zebras, giraffes, baboons,
buffalos, ostriches, vultures, hippopotamuses and various
antelopes. It's also the best park to spot the black rhinoceroses.
There are also many birds, up to 500 permanent
and migratory species in a year. The park is small, only
117 km2, but worth visiting if you are staying in Nairobi.
To the south of the National Park, is the
Kitengela Game Conservation Area and Migratory corridor
leading to the Athi and Kaputiei plains. The herbivores
disperse over these plains following the rains and return
to park during the dry season.
There's also an animal orphanage located
at the main entrance of the park. This is part of the
park and it was opened in 1963. Orphaned and sick animals
are brought from all over spacious accommodation in a
more natural environment.
The Kenya Wildlife Service has recently
created a Safari Walk, to highlight the variety of plants
and animals in Kenya and how they affect local people.
How to get there:
The park can be accessed by road through
Lang'ata Road from the City Centre which usually takes
about 15 - 20 minutes depending on the level o f traffic
interferences.
